The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
• “If it’s in the Herald it’s reliable.”
• A Grand Junction dispatch says Mt. Elliot, a 13,000-foot peak in southwestern Colorado, is showing signs of volcanic eruption.
• The fad of wearing extremely high collars will have a hurtful effect upon the flesh of the throat unless special care is given to prevent it.
• About 2,000 head of Texas and New Mexico “long horns” passed through town this week, on their way to the K-T ranch.
The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• Cecil B. DeMille’s “The 10 Commandments” was playing at the Rio Theatre. Also showing, “The Fly.”
• Trees are being removed from north of the hospital getting ready for the new Walbridge Memorial wing which will be built this year. The evergreens were transplanted to the city park, some near the fish pond and others west of the swimming pool.
• Miss Patricia Ann Collins became the bride of Marlin George at a pretty church wedding. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Erwin Simmons at the Meeker Methodist Church. The bride is the daughter of Dallas Collins and the granddaughter of pioneer Fred Burke.
• It has become necessary for the city law enforcement officers to ask that those using Third Street especially near the hospital to slow down. There has been a lot of racing and noise in that area in the past few weeks.
• Marshal Sam Cron asked that parents urge their children not to throw trash in the town ditch.

• Harry Watt and Glen Green were in search of investors for the development of a 25,000-square-foot shopping center.
• At the 72nd annual reunion of the Rio Blanco County Pioneers Association, 275 “old-timers” met for dinner and a dance program at the Fairfield Center.
• The MHS class of 1969 planned their 15-year reunion at Jim Cook’s house on 1134 Mark Circle for July 3.
• The cool, wet weather that plagued us all last week finally broke over the weekend.
• Bus driver Marie Rader and her upriver bus students had a near accident. While crossing one of the bridges, one side of the supports gave way after it had been eaten away by the fast-flowing water. Fortunately, the bus made it across.

• ERTL (Energy Resources Technology Land, Inc.) was pushing for oil shale production in Rio Blanco County. Dr. Tell Ertl states that a plant could be built that would produce 20,000 barrels of oil a day for less than $2 a barrel. Domestic crude now sells for a little less that $3.
• The first meeting of the newly organized junior college steering committee is set for June 17. Members are Jim Duggan, Claud Smith, Roe Saunders, Mesa College Committee, and Horace Wubben, Arnold Weiss and Herb Rooks, S.W. McLaughlin, Bill Elam and B.F. Yaeger.
• Wilma Russell, Clair Jean Redding and Lucille Wagner spent Tuesday in Grand Junction shopping.

• Earl Schmid retired after 26 years with RE-4 school district.
• Six new homes were under construction in Rangely, priced from $26,950 to $28,500.
• Kitty Ann Phipps and Bill Shelden announced their upcoming marriage. Wanda Jean Sheridan and Roger Dale Hefley exchanged wedding vows June 2, 1974. Debe Kay Pyatt became the bride of Ford Glen Brady.
• Seventh-grade girls’ track records broken by Chris Conroy, LeAnn Dixon, Beth Hayes, P. King, F. Teutsch, Gay Wardell and Beth Hayes. Eighth-grade records broken by Lorie Coy, Valerie Bock, L. Willis, D. Bacon, B. Conroy and Holly Day.
The Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• RBC agreed to turn the Raven A-1 well into an historical monument. The Raven A-1 was the first deep well drilled in the Weber sandstone in the Rangely field, in 1933.
• Don Barta was named as the new Rangely High School principal.
• Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Steward of Vernal, Utah, announced the engagement and wedding of their daughter, Becky Steward, to Nick Valdez of Rangely.
• Don Davis and Paula Tormey announced their July 1 marriage.
