The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

“Pink” Hossack, the well-known and popular freighter, has purchased the truck line—known as the Meeker-Rifle Transportation Company. “Salty” will continue as agent for the line at this end.

Freeman Fairfield sold a 2-year-old heifer the other day, and, with the proceeds, bought an auto (a good one at that). Just mention this to show that if you have cattle to sell these days you can get any old price.

On or about the 25th of May my gates were thrown open and the fence cut in two places on my ranch in Smith gulch and I offer $250 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the guilty party or parties. ~H.H. Grizzard.

Henry and Mrs. Stadtman, Jr., had their family circle widened last Wednesday (May 29) by the addition of a fine girl. Dr. Smith attended.

An electrical storm visited these parts Tuesday, and more or less rain fell everywhere—except in Meeker, where just a sprinkle put in an appearance.

Celebrating her first birthday Saturday, June 8, will be little miss Dondi Sue Clapper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Clapper.

Douglas (Doug) Charles Seely, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Seely of Meeker, celebrated his first birthday Wednesday, May 29.

Approximately 50 volunteers aided the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s department in their search for Steve Gianinetti Saturday, June 1, when their office was notified that the young junior high boy’s whereabouts had been unknown by his parents since 8:45 p.m. Friday. Steve was found by undersheriff Ron Hilkey and the two Moyer boys around 1 p.m., apparently returning home by way of Sulfur Creek Road near the town dump.

The dedication of Colowyo’s dragline on Friday capped a year-long construction project. The new dragline will increase production to 4.7 million tons of coal in 1993. The dragline, which arrived from Pennsylvania in 157 trucks and six railroad cars in 1992, will permit Colowyo to move approximately 14 million cubic-yards of overburden annually.

Mr. and Mrs. Terence Burnell of Montrose announce the engagement of their daughter, Jacqueline, to Lenny Klinglesmith.

Kent and Kris Borchard of Meeker are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kellie Rene, to Coley Vance Turner, son of Bill and Ann Turner. Both Kellie and Coley are 1988 graduates of Meeker High School.

Rosaly Coombs, family nurse practitioner, has joined the staff of the Meeker Family Clinc, Inc. where she will be providing medical services three days a week.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago

S.T. Rabourn, local oil man, was severely burned Monday afternoon in an accident about 5 miles west of Rangely on an Ed Delaney lease. He is under treatment at Rangely District Hospital and is reported in satisfactory condition.

Once again Rangely merchants have contributed to the Rangely Days parade. The Rangely Jaycees, sponsors of the parade, have been working hard to make this parade one of the best in rodeo history.

At their regularly scheduled May board meeting, the Rangely Public School Board of Education honored three retiring members of its staff with a special public reception: Carl Unzicker, Don Collins and William Palmer all had more than 20 years with the district.

– KCNC-TV, Channel 4 in Denver, honored the top 220 high school students from across the state. Robert “Bert” Ballard of Rangely was one of the students honored.
