The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

– The limit of time for filing tax returns has been extended to April 1. But don’t wait till the time limit expires. Do it now.

– Some of our citizens who put “this and that” together and then drew satisfying conclusions, are of the decided opinion that the recent sale of the famous Collom coal mine property at Axial means a railroad for this section. It probably means railroad connections ultimately, but not in the near future. The question as to whether the government will hold on to the railroads or return them to private ownership will have to be settled. The big bodies of coal which lie between Meeker and Axial could be tapped by a railroad built either from Rifle or from Wamsutter. Such a road could be built very cheaply; but, as we have said, nothing will be done until after the war.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

– Sharon Valentine was named Queen at the Sweetheart dance held at Meeker High School Saturday evening, Feb. 17. Margie Gutierrez and Judy Buckles were named Miss Valentine’s attendants.

– Saturday a group of nine men and boys made a snowmobile trip to the Rio Blanco Ranch and Loren Idol’s summer cabin about four miles this side of Trappers Lake. At the Idol cabin there were 3-1/2 to 4 feet of new snow on the cabin roof and about 7 feet on the level.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago

– The Meeker boys and girls varsity basketball squads “double-teamed” the competition at the district tournament. Both teams advance to regionals this weekend.

– Visitors at Bob and Gayle Crawford’s home might be surprised to see Tumblebug, a four-month-old shaggy American bison, who follows the couple from room to room. The Crawfords started buffalo ranching in 1986, when they purchased three, the start of their 45-head herd.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago

– A newspaper is a business, but it is more than a business. It is not a public utility, but it has a strong public responsibility. Newspapermen are not elected to office but a conscientious newspaperman feels that he is a servant of the people. Newspapers contain Boy Scout news, advice to the lovelorn columns, thousands of “filler” items on a thousand and one informative or entertaining material. The primary function, however, is a vehicle of communication, maintaining the public’s right to know what is going on. Newspapers are put out by people who for the most part are idealists and even sentimentalists. Mostly they are believers in a better life and a better world. They often are discouraged by the news they must print but they do not lose hope. Newspapers and newspapermen have been pictured in movies and novels over the years as being cruel and heartless. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sometimes cynical, sometimes skeptical, but not heartless.

– The town will host for the first time the annual Northwest League AA basketball tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Several hundred visitors will be her for all or a part of the sessions and we’d like to see them go away impressed by the hospitality of our town.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

– The Rangely Town Council did not have a second meeting this past month because there was not enough happening to warrant action or discussion. And the meeting of the county commissioners held in Meeker on the 21st of February also produced no action and limited discussion.

– The RHS girls’ basketball team won the District 5 tourney and are headed to Dolores. The winner of this game advances to the State 2A Tournament. The Colorado Gore 2A League North district championship team: Cori Ducey, Jamie Kurrasch, Jenifer Filener, Amber McPhail, Amy Williams, Rosa Lopez, Asst. Coach Chad Soupir, Stacy Crawford, Jame Hume, Coach Eldon Paczkowski, Manger Marie Thorsted, Kami Williams, Dena Banta, Nicole Clark, Manager Betty Lopez and Allison Foxley.

– RHS boys’ basketball team tied first league, second district 5 tournament, advance to regionals: Pancho Flores, Justin Halcomb, Chad Fairchild, Ben Bailey, Daniel Hefley, Allen Phelps, Justin Lawson, Kevin Mullen, Donavon Martinez, Jose Lopez, Coach Mark Skelton and assistant coach Jim Blennis, Kale Brady and Brandon Powell.
