The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

– The woman who was too modest to wear a slit skirt and expose her calf four years ago is now wearing a skirt that exposes both knees.
– Never run into debt if you can find anything else to run into.
– Town Marshal Clinard will enforce the speed limit. Autoists who have been in the habit of “burning up the road,” take due notice, or the speed cop will get ye.

– Dr. Farthing, county health officer, was called to Piceance this week to look into a smallpox case, the victim being Walter F. Allen, a newcomer from the Palisade region of Grand river. It seems that Mexican fruit pickers have brough the disease into that section. Prompt isolation action was taken.
– It is usual to have a spring cleanup of the town. Now let us have a fall clean-up here in Meeker. Outside (and in actual fact) this town is rated as the best business town of its size in the state. But at the present time its weed covered streets and vacant lots gives it a very unsightly appearance. Let the citizens join with the town authorities in a general cleanup.
– The present session of Congress, which will soon come to an end, will go down in the history of the nation as one of the most momentous on record; and, despite the handicap of the “Willful Twelve” and a few others of the same stamp, the overwhelming majority of both branches performed their duties patriotically.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

– During the football season you will find these six lovely girls leading the Meeker Pep Club who support the Cowboys in their athletic endeavors: Kathie Eskelson, Cindy Nieslanik, Linda Hazelbaker, Stephanie Withrow, Susie Romersberger and Susan Sprod.
– A car driven by Mrs. Nancy Cox caught fire as Mrs. Cox was returning from Joe Sullivan’s wheat field on French Hill on Highway 13 south of Meeker. Mrs. Cox’s husband Carl quickly scraped a fire wall around the car to prevent the flames from spreading to the wheat field until firemen arrived. Meeker firemen Cecil Bates, Jim Ruckman and Walt Brown made sure there were no sparks left to endanger the wheat.
– A 2-1 record stands behind them as the Meeker Cowboys make ready to meet Rangely High School on the Panther’s home field Friday.
– Contemplating a change in uniforms this year, officers of Meeker High School Pep Club are asking the people of Meeker for their opinions. Kay Brennan, club president, said the club is considering a change to shorts which will not be any shorter than dresses. If the public would like to comment on this, they are asked to contact Miss Brennan or Sally Lou Johnson before next Wednesday.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago

– Co-chairman of the Colorado Grand tour Bob Sutherland and 249 drivers and support staff arrived in Meeker with 89 pre-1960 vintage sports and racing cars on the fourth annual Colorado Grand.
– The students of Barone Junior High School gave a standing ovation during their first pep rally of the year to Sam Barone and his wife, Shirley, for their 58 years of service to the school and the district. The junior high school was renamed in Barone’s honor earlier this year.
– The principal, George E. Hertzke of Meeker High School, announced today that Tassie S. Medlin has been named a commended student in the 1993 National Merit Scholarship Program.
– Tomato juice is water compared to neutroleum alpha, the newest thing in skunk smell remover, according to extension agent Bill Ekstrom. He says a pint goes a long way and is what you need this season because skunks are all over—spring babies have been weaned and kicked out on their own and moms and dads are migrating in search of winter homes.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago

– Rangely High School’s 1967 Homecoming festivities start Thursday night with a snake dance led by RHS cheerleaders. Theme of this year’s Homecoming is “Psychedelic Realm.” Candidates for Homecoming Queen are seniors Kathy Baker, Linda Sutton and Cheryl Clark, junior Geneva Langston; sophomore Tina Bulwan and freshman Willa Kay Powell.
– A Friday the 13th rummage sale has been scheduled by the women of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. The event will be a flea market held at the Rio Roll roller rink and will include a bake sale.
– Rangely’s Dale Stahlecker and Zack Ziegler intercepted two passes. Cited for defensive efforts in the losing cause were Jay Rector and Mike Hutton who recovered Cougar fumbles, Shalecker and Zeigler for intercepted passes, and Mark Row on offense.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

– It’s Homecoming again and Rangely High School is planning to have a great time. The theme chosen for Homecoming this year is “We Will Rock You,” sung by Queen. Bob Fairchild was named Grand Marshall of the parade.
– He didn’t know why or how it happened, but Brett Powell’s black powder rifle blew up in his hand.
– Nathan Allred, son of Dave and JoAnn Allred, has received his Arrow of Light, the highest rank of Cub Scouts.
