On the morning of March 17, Town of Rangely employees and the Rangely Rural Fire Protection District burned the mass of tree limbs and debris deposited by residents after an ice storm downed trees and power lines across the county in October. An initial plan to mulch the pile was nixed after the town estimated the job would cost roughly $20,000. Winds picked up Saturday afternoon, closing the recreation center for part of the afternoon when smoke filtered into the center and nearby Rangely District Hospital. Workers watched the pile over the weekend and will work to move the ashes and remaining limbs to the landfill, Rangely Town Manager Peter Brixius said Monday.
