Despite break, RHS tracksters do well

RANGELY I Even though Rangely High School was on spring break last week, the track and field team continued to practice and competed in Hotchkiss on Saturday.

Many of the Panther athletes were out of town, but the team took 17 athletes to the meet.
Hotchkiss will be a meet to be remembered since we had all four seasons in one meet, Head Track Coach Beth Scoggins said.
“One moment we were thinking of peeling off some of our layers because we were getting hot and had just put on sunscreen, then it started to snow, heavily,” she said. “The weather was crazy, but it was a good meet to challenge the athletes to see what they can do in all types of weather.”
The Panthers had just three jumpers with Brennan Noyes, Aspen Rhea and Raelynn Norman. Noyes had a very impressive meet with a new personal record of 6 feet 2 inches in the high jump, claiming first place. He was also able to place second in the triple jump with a jump of 38-7.
Rhea was able to place 11th in the long jump with a jump of 13-3 and Norman gave the high jump a try and was able to clear the bar at 4-1, good enough for 13th place.
For runners, the Panthers had Sarah Connor, Talyn Peck, Miekka Peck, Makenze Cochrane, Aspen Rhea, Patrick Scoggins, Daniel Connor, Savannah Nielsen and Raelynn Norman.
Sarah Connor ran the 100-meter hurdles in 19.81, taking eighth place.
Several of the throwers gave the 100-meter dash a try. Talyn Peck ran a 17.01, Miekka Peck turned in a 15.85 with Makenze Cochran running a 15.95.
Aspen Rhea gave a good run in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She ran personal bests in both events: 14.50 in the 100 and 31.53 for the 200.
Patrick Scoggins ran an odd combination of events with the 100, 200 and 800 meters. For the 100, he placed fifth with a time of 11.81, he placed third in the 200 dash with a time of 25.14, and he placed sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:13.
Daniel Connor continues to improve in the 1600 meters He took another 10 seconds off his personal best with a time of 5:40. He also ran the 800 in a time of 2:38.
Savannah Nielsen took 10 seconds off her personal best time in the 1600 from last week for a time of 6:33, and she also ran the 800 in a time of 3:00.
Raelynn Norman also ran the 1600- and 800-meter runs; in the 1600 she ran a 6:55, and for the 800, she turned in a 3:09.
The throwers had a hard time getting marks because of the wind with discus having a particularly hard time.
Senior Chance Sheppard led the throwers with a toss of 104-4 in the discus and a 34-05 in the shot. He is just a couple of inches off from his best throws.
Cameron Filfred wasn’t able to get a mark in either throws but is improving at each meet. Miekka Peck led the girls in the discus with a throw of 71 feet, and, in the shot put she threw a personal record of 26-2.
Makenze Cochrane was able to throw 61-6 and was able to toss the shot for 26-3. Mikayla Filfred threw the shot 23-3 but she wasn’t able to get a mark on the discus.
Alexis Wiley and Talyn Peck also threw the discus. Breanna Davis threw the shot for 26-7. Kaylee Mecham was able to toss the shot for 19-8 for her first meet.
The Panthers will be competing at Cedaredge on Saturday, and the junior varsity team will compete on Monday in Glenwood Springs.
