MEEKER I The field was not but the competition was in the annual two-man scramble golf tournament held at the Meeker Golf Course last week.
Nine teams played 27-holes in two different flights, with gross and net champions in each flight.
Meeker locals Scott Bowman and Lex Collins were tied with Bryce Ducey and Rangely’s Robby Elam after the first turn, then led by four shots after 18 holes were played.
“We were down by four strokes, with seven holes to play and we won by one,” Elam said after he and Ducey shot a seven-under par 27 on the final nine holes to win with a gross score of 94, one ahead of Bowman and Collins.
Bowman said he had “no comment,” then proceeded to comment off the record.
Brothers Andy and Pat Coryell finished with the best net score (85) in the championship flight.
Only four teams played in the second flight, and after the first nine holes, local veterans Irv Griffin and Donnie McPherson led the field one shot ahead of the teams of Ackerman and Ray Cheshire and Mark Litzelman and Clint Chappell.
Litzelman and Chappell took the lead after the second nine and never looked back, shooting a five-under-par 29 on the final nine to win by six shots.
Ackerman and Cheshire held on to finish with the best net score in the second flight.
The next tournament at the Meeker Golf Course will be the Ladies’ Deerfly scheduled for June 11.
