The cast of “Fables” dinner theatre included (back row, from left) Caleb Dodds, Catherine Eliasen, Kaylene Weinholdt, McKenna Kummer, Michelle Smith, Jason Hightower, director Gary Zellers; (front row from left) Faye Peterson, Stephy Joos and Mariah Jensen.
MEEKER I The Meeker Arts and Cultural Council (MACC) in cooperation with the ERBM Recreation and Parks District presented a dinner theatre production, “A Bagful of Fables” by Robert R. Lehan, based on five of “Aesop’s Fables” on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Fairfield Center.
This hilarious production starring local community actors and high school drama club members who have been rehearsing and preparing for the show since December delighted audience members who enjoyed a delicious catered dinner by Brother’s Custom Processing.
Cast members included Jason Hightower as Aesop; Caleb Dodds as the “Crow” and as the “Wolf”; McKenna Kummer as the “Hare”; Mariah Jensen as “Sheep Barney”; Stephy Joos as the “Tortoise”; Catherine Eliasen as the “Farmer/Woman”; Michelle Smith as “Sheep Basil” Kaylene Weinholdt as “Sheep Bradley/Sun Queen”; Faye Peterson as the “Wolf”; and Ohana Mataia as “the Wind” and as “the Grapes.”
Aesop’s Fables is considered classic literature consisting of more than 200 short stories on many of “life’s lessons,” some hilarious, some sad, but all are timeless. They included the Fox and the Crow, the Fox and the Grape, the Tortoise and the Hare, the Wind and the Sun and the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. Interactive audience participation with the actors was featured and as always, was great fun.
Another community production by MACC is planned for later this spring in an ongoing series of live performing arts productions.

Performing and Fine Arts Enrichment Seminars
MACC in cooperation with Colorado Mesa University (CMU) theatre arts department and with Meeker High School, will present a series of performing and fine arts enrichment seminars that will be offered to local school students and to community members interested in improving their skills and knowledge about theatre and drama. CMU will provide professional faculty members at three-hour Saturday afternoon seminars to be held at Meeker High School. The first seminar will explore musical productions and vocal music techniques.
Drama club members from Meeker and Rangely High Schools have been invited to participate as have community members and others who are interested. Seminars will be “hands-on” interactive workshops with CMU theatre arts faculty members. Future seminars are planned to include method acting, directing, technical theatre, stage combatives training and other topics in 2013. More details on this program will be announced in the near future. Those interested may call 970-878-4832 or email [email protected]

Abraham Lincoln reenactment production March 14
MACC and the Rio Blanco County Historical Society have joined to cooperatively present John Voehl, a renowned Abraham Lincoln re-enactor in an evening production on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the Meeker High School auditorium. The production is free to the public. Two school shows at the Meeker schools will be presented for students during the day. Funding for the event has been secured through the generosity of the Freeman Fairfield Charitable Trust.

“Paint the Wall” downtown mural competition
MACC is seeking design proposals for the “Paint the Wall” artist’s mural competition to be displayed on the east wall of Shepherd’s Office Outfitters. Interested artists may contact Jeanette and Chad Shepherd for application and proposal information.

Creative District Formation for Economic Development
MACC is working actively with the Meeker Economic Development task force to include “creative industries” through performing and fine arts opportunities which attract visitors and possible future businesses and residents who may choose to locate in the White River Valley.
Successful communities with strong financial growth often have equally robust arts and cultural opportunities for entertainment and education, which in turn can become a source of income and employment. Creative industries are the fifth largest economic energy in Colorado. Designation as a Creative District has been shown to greatly enhance such programs and increase eligibility for start up grants and funding.
Use of the old elementary school as a community performing and fine arts, and as a volunteer organization center has been discussed and further discussions with community members, organizations and government leaders will be pursued to explore feasibility and benefits.
Recognizing the need for funding to provide performing and fine arts services and venues for the community, MACC will explore grant funding opportunities which could facilitate building and renovation for performing and fine arts venues that would support these needs. Any such pursuits will clearly require broad-based support of community members, local government, special districts, businesses, corporations and philanthropic organizations.
MACC continues to seek new youth and adult membership, and business/corporate sponsor membership and invites community members to join meetings and activities.
For more information on MACC please contact president Gary Zellers at 878-0554 or email [email protected].

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
