MEEKER I Thirty golfers over the age of 50 gathered at Meeker Golf Course for the annual Old Farts in Carts tournament on.
The field was divided evenly into two flights, Young Guys (50-62) and Old Guys (62 and older) and, for the first time, four women (a.k.a. Fartettes) played in the tournament.
Kirk Blazyk of Glenwood Springs won the Young Guys flight with a gross score of 75, the same score Mark Barlau of Grand Junction shot in the Old Guys flight, which was also good enough to win.
Meeker’s Bill De Vergie tied with former Meekerite Gordon Merriam for the second-best gross score (81) in the Young Guys flight. Clint Chappell also shot a gross score of 81 but took first place net honors, giving Red Wooley of Glenwood Springs second net.
Barlau played five shots better than Glenwood Springs’ Ash Durrett, who finished with the second best gross score in the Old Guys flight while Phil Gallagher beat Joe Barnhill by the same amount in the net scoring.
“The scores were kind of high, but it was the biggest turnout we have had for it in several years,” local golf pro Jim Cook said. “This was also the first year ladies played in the tournament. We had a spot and they had fun playing.”
Peggy Back had the best gross score of the four women, which included Susie Sprod (best net score), Patty Merriam and Pat Sanson.
