MEEKER I Have you ever seen a group of kids on the side of the road picking up trash? Or bought a box of peaches from a kid talking about the club FCCLA? Well, that’s who we are: the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. We volunteer our time to make Meeker a better and prettier place to live.We strive to improve our network of relations, build a solid foundation for our lives that will help with our careers in the future and practice focusing time on others, like our friends, family, school and community.
The week of Feb. 11 was very special to us FCCLA kids. Feb. 11-15 was national FCCLA week and as part of celebrating our dedication, the Meeker chapter decorated the Meeker Post Office for Valentine’s Day. We also delivered homemade goods such as cookies and mini-cheesecakes to our community service departments like the police department and sheriff’s office to say thank you for their dedication to the community. We also held an assembly at the high school to promote FCCLA as well as bring attention to our two national programs: The “No Kid Go Hungry” campaign, in which we take donations from the general public and through the “Share Our Strength” program that sends money to kids all across America to ensure that every child gets the nutritious meals that he or she needs. If you would like to find out more, please visit www.nokidhungry.org.
Our second national program is the “Hands Are for Driving” campaign which stresses the importance of not texting and driving as well as explaining the dangers and risks of taking your attention off the road. Remember, “it can wait!”
The Meeker FCCLA chapter also supported the Meeker New Eden Pregnancy Center by putting out a “supply drive” box at every home basketball game to collect diapers, formula and other supplies. If you would like to help donate to either the New Eden Pregnancy Center or the No Kids Go Hungry campaign please contact Becky Ridings or Angela Blaisedell at the high school at 878-9070.
Also, as part of helping our community, we have decorated cookies with the elementary school kids and we plan to spend some quality time with our local elderly at the Walbridge Wing before our trip to state competition in April.
Lastly, the Meeker FCCLA chapter would like to thank all our many supporters for their dedication and continued support.
