MEEKER I New champions were crowned last Saturday as the Meeker men’s and women’s clubs held their annual tournament at the Meeker Golf Course.
Matt Fellows and Randy Hall both won their first club titles, while Pattie Terp won her third club title, which includes bragging rights for the next year.
“It was a good group of guys I was playing with,” Fellows said of Chad Luce, Dave Brown and Dave Henderson after the tournament.
Luce and Brown, along with Lex Collins, all shot 2-over-par 36s on the front nine, while defending champ J.C. Watt trailed by one and Fellows was two shots off the lead after the first nine.
“Birdie, birdie, birdie, that’s how you finish strong,” Fellows boasted of his score on three of the final four holes, in front of his friend Collins, who finished second.
Fellows birdied the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to help take his first club title and give his friend second place.
“It’s like kissing your sister,” Collins said of his runner-up finish.
Fellows played seven shots better on the back nine to win the title with a 1-over-par 69, Collins was two shots back. Luce and Brown tied for first in the net scoring at 63. Watt finished out of the money, with a gross score of 72.
Terp was the best female golfer on the course, winning the women’s club championship with a gross score of 85, two shots ahead of Peggy Back. Defending champion Susie Sprod did not compete to defend her title. Back and Patty Edwards tied for the best net score at 62.
Randy Hall finished three shots ahead of Irv Griffin to win the second flight of the men’s club championship. Bill Stewart finished with the best net score (63) and Greg Ackerman had a net score of 66.
