Fellows, Watt win two-man scramble

MEEKER I After 27 holes of golf, Matt Fellows and J.C. Watt won the two-man scramble last Sunday at Meeker Golf Course. Fellows and Watt scrambled to the lead after the first turn and kept it for the following 18. Meeker High School sophomore Trey Morris and Norbert Boes were the best golfers in the second flight, finishing with a gross score of 100.
“I’m so proud of my husband,” Alicia Watt said with a smile, after the media-shy champion suggested contacting his partner (who could not be reached by deadline) for comment.
“J.C. got hot early, putting the pressure on everyone and they couldn’t keep up; he’s too good of a player,” local golf pro Jim Cook said of Watt.
Fellows and Watt shot a 4-under-par 30 on the first nine and followed it up with 4-under-par on the final 18 holes to post the best gross score in the annual event of 94.
Three teams had the second-best gross score; Brett Tonozzi and Dennis Rohn tied with Bob Shultis and Dan Embson, as well as Pat Walsh and Dave Brown, at 100.
Erik Brown and Lex Collins, who have been golfing partners since 1993 and are “always in the money,” according to Brown, didn’t disappoint, as the pair shot a gross score of 97 and had the best handicapped score of 83, for first-place net honors.
Andy and Pat Coryell finished the 27 holes with the second-best gross score of 101.
“Old-timers” Harry Watt and Butch Rael finished second in the second flight, with a 2-over-par 104.
Deloy Cook and Bryce Ducey were one stroke behind the old-timers’ gross score but took first-place net honors in the second flight, with a net score of 81. Greg Ackerman and George Kuck were second with a net score of 85.
The Bob Tucker Memorial Golf Tournament is full and will be played this Saturday. The four-person scramble raises funds for an annual scholarship in memory of the former long-time Meeker coach.
