MEEKER I Five Meeker wrestlers traveled to St. George, Utah, to compete in the Jacobs Challenge National tournament and all five placed, including one champion.
Barone Middle School seventh-grader TJ Shelton has amassed a 47-10 record since last fall and added another national title to his resume, pinning all three of his opponents.
Shelton’s younger brother Jake finished second in St. George and Cole Purcell, wrestling in the rookie division (two years or less of wrestling) placed third in his bracket.
Purcell’s older brother Austin won two matches, as did Chase Rule and both finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
TJ Shelton has been wrestling since last fall with the Bad Dog team from Craig and has won three other national tournaments, including one in Florida. Shelton won the Monster Match National and Big Horn National tournament and will try to win the triple crown when he competes at Rocky Mountain Nationals in March. Shelton placed second at the Who’s Bad Nationals and third in the Idaho Nationals last December.
Shelton started wrestling with Barone Middle School teammates Monday.
