Burkie Wynkoop, former Craig resident now residing in Battlement Mesa, was recently inducted in to the Colorado Football Officials Association Hall of Fame, class of 2009. Recipients are nominated and approved by the Colorado Football Officials Board of Directors, recognizing the honorees’ outstanding contributions, commitment and service to student athletes of high school football.
Wynkoop worked out of Craig during his 21 years of officiating games in northwest Colorado, and also coached Craig Middle School football for 20 some years, before retiring from in 2003. His resume included eight years officiating in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, working college football games.
In 1994 in a playoff game at Granby, Wynkoop suffered an injury on the field resulting in major knee surgery, which left him unable to run. After 21 years of officiating, he had to “hang up his cleats.” He attempted one more game in 1995 and realized the doctor was right, his running days were over.
