CRAIG I On Sunday at approximately 7:29 p.m., Colorado State Patrol troopers were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident on Moffat County Road 7, near Milepost 7.
A former Meeker man, Hunter Zellers, 24, died from injuries sustained in the accident, and the driver, from Craig, was transported to The Memorial Hospital in Craig.
A silver 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 being driven by Patrick McCarthy, 24, of Craig, was traveling northwest on Moffat County Road 7 near mile post 7, passing another vehicle, reports a press release from the Colorado State Patrol. The Dodge reportedly lost control in the curve, rotated clockwise and traveled off the south side of the roadway and down an embankment, the release stated, adding that the Dodge struck a fence while it rolled two and a half times, coming to rest on its roof facing west.
During the rollover, Zellers, a passenger in the Dodge who had been living in Craig, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck, the CSP report stated.
McCarthy was transported to The Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Craig, where he was treated and released with minor injuries. Zellers was transported to TMH in critical condition, then died from his injuries at the hospital.
Drug and alcohol impairment is not suspected in this crash, however, excessive speed is suspected to be a contributing factor, the CSP report stated.
The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol. No charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.
The Colorado State Patrol was assisted by the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Craig Fire/EMS, The Memorial Hospital Ambulance, and the Moffat County Coroner’s Office.
