Four golfers make up Meeker team, which opens season at Battlement

MEEKER I At least two players are needed to be sanctioned as a high school golf team, and at least three are needed to score as a team in tournaments. Meeker High School started with two and now has four players out for the team this season, which started last week.
Cowboy senior Garrett Griffin will be joined by sophomores Trey Morris, Hunter Fellows and Cameron Tegeder.
Griffin has been on the team the last two years and is looking forward to his final high school season.
“I got my first set of clubs when I was a freshman and went out for the team as a sophomore,” Griffin said.
The first tournament of the season was in Battlement Mesa and Griffin said he didn’t have a “good day.”
“I’ve been playing a lot this summer but didn’t play very well there,” Griffin said of the season opener. “I’m excited about the season and looking forward to regionals at Haymaker in Steamboat, I’ve played there before.”
Morris played in the first tournament of the season last Thursday in Battlement Mesa and finished 11th. Morris has finished in the top 10 in eight other tournaments he has played in this summer, including one, first-place finish in Gypsum and seconds in Delta and on his home course in July.
Morris missed the cut to qualify for the state tournament last year by one stroke and Griffin was two away.
Fellows and Tegeder have golf experience but will be playing competitively for the first time.
Klark Kindler, who is starting his 12th year as a teacher/coach in Meeker, will coach this year’s quartet.
“I would like to introduce more kids to the game and get them excited about playing golf,” Kindler said.
Kindler said the team will play in at least seven tournaments including regionals, which will be held in Steamboat Springs on the Haymaker Golf Course, near the end of September.
