Four Panthers to state

phrgstate track qualifiers — The Rangely Panthers qualified four athletes for the 2011 Colorado State Track and Field Championship, starting today in Denver. Sophomore William Scoggins will be running the 3200, senior Marie Morton will be competing both in the shot put and discus, senior Victoria Phelan will be competing in the triple jump and freshmen Andrew Morton will in the high jump. The 2011 Panther track season has come to the end for all but four athletes. Rangely will be sending two seniors, one sophomore and one freshman to the state track meet this weekend in Denver.

The seniors include Victoria Phelan in the triple jump (31 feet 11 1/4 inches) and Marie Morton in both the shot put (31-6 1/4) and the discus(104-3). The sophomore athlete is William Scoggins in the 3200 meter run (10:42.14) and the freshman is Andrew Morton in the high jump (5-11). Over all the 2011 track season went well considering the Panthers as well as all other schools in the northwest part of the state had just three or four weekends of good weather for the whole season.

All 18 team members of the 2011 track team improved their own personal records throughout the season.

On the men’s team, senior Cole Barlow ran his personal best at the Western Slope Championships in three events: the 100 meter dash, 200 and 400 and just missed out going to state in those events. Senior Chase Kenny also improved every meet in the shot put and discus. Senior Devin Williams barely missed out going in the 1600 meter run by less than .37 seconds.

Junior Ethan Peacock qualified for state in the 300 hurdles. Colton Coombs had personal best at the championships in the 100 and 200 dashes. Jake Smith did an outstanding job coming off an injury and improving every meet he threw in.

Sophomore Chris Staley continued to improve every week, while the freshman class, consisting of the Neilsen twins, Dale and Tanner, continued to improve their time weekly in the distance runs. Connor Phelan also had a great meet as he broke the freshman class record in the 400 that had stood since 1994.
