Fourteen teams compete in Cowboy Kickoff Classic

MEEKER I His team has yet to play a game, but head coach Shane Phelan already knows the score when it comes to community support for the Meeker High School football team.
“What a nice turnout. We really appreciate everyone coming out and supporting us,” Phelan said before the shotgun start of the Cowboy Kickoff Classic golf tournament Saturday afternoon at Meeker Golf Course.
Fourteen four-person teams played in the 18-hole scramble, which includes extra challenges, such as using a baseball bat to tee off No. 1, golfers use a junior driver on No. 3 and a hockey stick to putt on No. 7.
While there was a definite champion, a playoff was needed to determine the runner-up. Meeker’s new school superintendent Doug Pfau teamed up with Trey Morris, Pat Walsh and Walsh’s nephew Nate to shoot an 8-under par 60 for the title.
Assistant football coach Andy Coryell, along with Bryce Ducey, Jeremy Main and Rick Dodds, defeated head coach Shane Phelan, Kyle Whitaker, Ethan Overton and local golf pro Jim Cook in the playoff for second place.
“We appreciate all the support for our sponsors and hope to see everyone at the games,” Phelan said.
