RBC I Ran Cochran has been the local funeral home director serving Rio Blanco County for the past dozen years.
And it has given him a unique perspective on the people and communities he has served. Cochran Memorial Chapels had offices in Meeker and Rangely.
“There are people who would say the funeral business is all about endings,” said Cochran, who has sold the business. “I feel that’s only part of my job. When I am invited to help a family say farewell to a loved one — to celebrate the ending of a life — I am also helping with a new beginning. The start of a changed life.
“My job has allowed me the chance to be invited to join a family at the most difficult time of their lives. That has been an honor,” Cochran said. “While we’ve shed some tears at the endings, we’ve celebrated beginnings together … the birth of babies, weddings, I’ve watched 12 first days of school from my office window (across from Meeker Elementary School). We’ve shared in each others’ lives, and for that I’m very grateful.”
Cochran, who has doubled as the county coroner, looks back fondly on his time in Rio Blanco County.
“I’ve been blessed in my 12 years here,” he said. “I’m not sure what my next step will be. For right now, I plan to stay in Meeker and conclude my term as coroner (which ends in January). Through the years Rhonda (his ex-wife) and I have had great help. Sue Kirkham has been a godsend. There are a lot of people who help in the background, and for their help we’re thankful. We couldn’t have done anything without help.
“For Sydney (his daughter) and me this is a bittersweet ending, but also the start of a very exciting beginning,” Cochran said.
