MEEKER I “The girls had a lot of fun on the volleyball court and that hasn’t really been the case on our teams the last couple of years,” Meeker’s head coach Christy Atwood said. “It felt good to be a part of that and winning helps that attitude.”Win was all the lady Cowboys did in their first tournament of the season in Glenwood Springs, winning all four matches played without losing a single game.“We were put in a pool with smaller schools and I think it will help get our momentum started,” Atwood said of the competition. “In the past, we took this tournament too seriously. I have a good feeling about the direction our team is taking.Meeker beat league foe West Grand 25-23 and 25-9 in the first match of the season Friday before defeating Denver Christian 25-15 and 26-24. Meeker then beat Nucla 25-15 and 25-20, and pounded Glenwood Springs’ JV team 25-16 and 25-21 in the final match of the tournament.“It was a great team effort and the girls are getting used to each other,” Atwood said. “The girls are excited to try new things on the court and are working really hard to make our game better every single day.”Atwood said one of the team goals is to serve 90 percent as a team and the lady Cowboys served 94 percent in their first tournament, which Atwood said was “incredible.”“We are focusing on one fundamental each day that will make us better,” Atwood said. “We also passed above 80 percent, which is good.”Meeker hopes to continue their winning ways this weekend as they host Hayden Friday before traveling to Oak Creek for games Saturday afternoon.“We saw both these teams this summer,” Atwood said. “Hayden has a new coach so I don’t know what to expect. We’ll put in a game plan and adapt as needed, then go at them.”Meeker’s JV and C-team both played in Palisade and the JV team won all four of their matches and the C-team went 1-3.
