MEEKER — The Lady Cowboys have lost three games so far this season, yet they are undefeated in league games, with two key matchups this weekend. Meeker beat the DeBeque Dragons 71-24 last Thursday, then whipped the West Grand Mustangs 57-42 in front of a hometown crowd last Friday.
“DeBeque only had five players so we got to try a lot of different things,” head coach Hallie Blunt said of the game against the Dragons. “Stacey (Fitzgibbons) made a three and Marki (Cook) played post.” Cook led the team with 23.
“I was happy with how we played against West Grand,” Blunt said. “We did some good things on defense in the first half but couldn’t make baskets. The girls stuck with it, kept working and then played the best third quarter we have all season.
Janae Kindall scored 11 of her 14 points in the third quarter and Cook again led the team with 22. Sydney Cook also finished in double figures with 10, Fitzgibbons had six, Megan Ridings three and Kelsey Kendall finished with two.
Meeker has already avenged its first loss in the season-opening Cowboy Shootout to the North Park Wildcats, with a league win Jan. 9 and this week Meeker will play in Hayden Friday and host the Rangely Panthers Saturday.
“Paonia, Rangely, Hayden and Meeker have secured the top four spots,” Meeker head coach Hallie Blunt said of the Northwest League standings. “Now we see who gets the top seed.”
Meeker recently lost to Hayden in a non-league game (Feb. 6) and the lady Cowboys lost to the Panthers in the Cowboy Shootout.
“Hayden has a new coach and he has done a great job with his team and they have some good players,” Blunt said of Friday’s competition. “They are a good team. We’ll have to make some adjustments defensively and shoot more than 20 percent from the field in the league game, to expect a different outcome.”
The league game deciding the Rio Blanco County championship will be held in Meeker, with the varsity scheduled to tipoff at 2:30 p.m.
