RANGELY — The Udderly Cool Goat club met Thursday, May 8 at the extension office after planting trees at the community pens. There are many upcoming events for the club that included the feeder show on May 10, our community service projects and a fun trip later in the year.
The feeder show is a chance for all 4-H members to weigh and tag their animals. This year we had an exceptional turnout of around 50 kids and their animals. The community service projects include taking baby goats up to the Giant Step Preschool on May 20 around 3:15 p.m. and to Eagle Crest around 4:30 p.m.
Giving people the chance to play with and learn about animals is a great bonus of being in 4-H.
Later on May 27, the club is going to be painting the Rangely fairgrounds with the Rangely Cloverbuds. We have also decided to host a skill-a-thon on June 10 at 10 a.m. at the community pens. At our skill-a-thon everyone in the goat club will pick one subject and talk to people about it. Skill-a-thon subjects including washing, shaving, vaccinations, trimming hoofs and more. Everyone is invited to attend. This will also count as everyone’s demonstrations for the year.
At the meeting we continued with our goat body part naming game. We will be continuing with this game until we have no problem remembering our goat anatomy. This time we also had a knowledge bowl on goats. The club split up into two teams; the girls against the guys. When choosing names the guys stayed with the traditional “The Boys” while the girls were a little more creative with “Princess Zena’s Warrior Goats.” Needless to say the girls won with a score of 15-14.
Next month we will be talking about sportsmanship and ethics and also practice our showmanship. The next meeting will be after the skill-a-thon on the June 10. I would like to remind you that you are welcome to come to the skill-a-thon and to thank you all for the community support you have given us, allowing us to have so much fun at all our meetings.
