Golf course gets new manager

Sisters Boudreaux, Edwards win Ladies Deerfly
MEEKER — Darrin Rohn’s first tournament as the new manager of the Meeker Golf Course was the Ladies Deerfly, which was won by two Rio Blanco County sisters.
“Some of the women were asking for heaters,” Rohn said of the chilly temperatures when the tournament began. “The tournament ran smoothly and everyone seemed to have fun.”
Sisters Ellen Boudreaux and Patti Edwards won the annual Ladies Deerfly golf tournament held last Saturday at the Meeker Golf Course, which is under new management. The Rio Blanco County sisters shot a two-under par 66 to win.
“We ham and egged it all day,” Boudreaux said of the team play with her younger sibling.
“A lot of ham and a little egg,” Edwards said pointing to her older sister, then herself.
Mindy Burke and Christy Atwood were three stokes behind the winners but instead of a second place gross finished, they took top net honors with a net score of 47.
Jan and Deb Henderson finished second with a 78, while two teams tied for the third best gross score.
Meeker’s Shawn Luce and Sandy Ivy of Craig, tied with Lynn Kern and Susan Schmidt-Farmer of Battlement Mesa. Both teams finished one shot behind Luce and Ivy.
Hallie Blunt and Pam Stranathan finished with the second best net score, in the field of 14 teams, with a net score of 50.
Meeker’s Peggy Back teamed up with former Meekerite Sherrard Shults for third place with a net score of 53.
Rohn, who is the twin brother of former Meeker golf pro Dennis Rohn, is excited about his new position.
“It’s nice doing something I love to do,” Rohn said. “Having a good crew like Lorette (Sikes) and Donnie (McPherson), have made the transition a lot easier.
Rohn’s wife and three children will soon move to Meeker from Kearney, Neb., to join Rohn in Meeker. Rohn plans to begin testing to become a golf professional.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
