Sombrero Ranches drove an estimated 650 horses from Browns Park, where they are wintered, to Big Gulch Ranch approximately 11 miles west of Craig last weekend. Sombrero’s Lee Peters said the horses would be leased to church camps, scout camps, dude ranches and riding stables around the state for the summer before returning for new shoes, then back out to deer and elk camps for hunting seasons in the fall. Peters said there were 53 paid guest riders and a staff of 28 were needed for the two-day, 60-mile journey, marketed as the Great American Horse Drive.
