Growing your own food topic of meeting

MEEKER — Growing your own food will be the topic of a presentation March 21.
The program, titled “Soil, Seeds and Seasons: Gardening on the Western Slope,” will be presented by Brook Le Van of Carbondale, who is director of Sustainable Settings.
Seating is limited for the event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. upstairs at the Hugus Building in Meeker. There is a $10 charge to attend. A potluck lunch will be available, so people who attend are asked to bring a food dish.
The program is sponsored by a new group called Foods-Are-Us, in conjunction with the Rio Blanco Farm Bureau.
Foods-Are-Us is made up of a “group of folks who are interested in knowing about our food,” said Jason Taylor, one of the group’s members.
“This is kind of a grassroots effort … to identify, connect and build a community of locally grown agriculture,” Taylor said. “It’s this idea of what you put into your body matters. So understanding where the food came from, who grew it, how it was grown, all matters when making choices about the food you want to put into your body.”
