MEEKER — The turnout was fabulous for speaker Amy Dillon’s presentation to Meeker School District’s accountability committees and interested staff.
Dillon, from the Rocky Mountain Center for Health Promotion and Education (RMC), gave a “nuts and bolts” presentation about the national organization. Dillon also addressed nutrition and health in schools and cited some successful programs in the state.
“Healthy kids learn better,” attested Dillon as she discussed the connection between health and student achievement. And those in attendance were given ample time for questions and answers on resources and program options available.
Dillon stressed the importance of “buy in” from the community, parents and staff for implementing successful programs. She also emphasized that the goal with RMC funded programs is for them to become self sustained over time to create healthier communities.
The MHS accountability committee extends special thanks Margo Robb for setting up the informative evening with Dillon. Robb has worked closely with RMC in securing grant funds and program implementation for many successful programs within the district.
Additionally, Meeker’s Build a Generation (BAG) and coordinator Dondi Glasscock, work closely with RMC on funding and implementation of the K-12 Tobacco Prevention Initiative. The coordinated efforts of many make strides towards a healthier school and community.
The committee had a short meeting following the presentation. They met with Peggy Back from the hot lunch program. The group decided to limit snacks and beverages at “Cowboy Time” to the new healthier options, effective immediately. Discussions regarding a closed campus were tabled until the February meeting.
The next meeting is Feb. 11, at 5:30 p.m. which will start off with building accountability training and is open to members from all three buildings. The meeting will be in the Meeker High School library.
