RANGELY I Ten teams entered the annual Rangely Elks Scramble Golf Tournament on Saturday at Cedar Ridges Golf Course, benefiting the local fraternal organization and in preparation for the Rio Blanco County Cup to be played in Rangely on Saturday and Sunday.
“The tournament went well and we had another exciting playoff,” golf manager Chris Hejl said of the Elks tournament. Hejl said the Elks are considering extending the tournament to 27 holes next year.
Marty Marquez, Dennis Medina, Danny Medina and his wife made a putt on the second hole of a playoff to beat Tyson Dana, James Danner, Ronny Hegemann and Jason Kurrasch for the best net score.
Hejl and his brother, Eric, and father, Steve, were joined by Kris Huitt and they proved to be the best golfers on the course, shooting a 59 – three shots better than Robby and Ryan Elam, Justin Halcomb and Brian Prater.
Hejl said he has more than 20 members from his course signed up for the Rio Blanco County Cup, a two-day match play tournament (similar to the Ryder Cup, according to Hejl) between Rangely and Meeker players. Men and women will represent their respective courses and play for the coveted RBC Cup, which has been on display at Meeker Golf Course for the past two years, much to Hejl’s dismay.
