RBC I Rio Blanco Historical Society met Sunday afternoon at Kilowatt Korner in Meeker to share a soup luncheon and elect officers. Amid the quarterly meeting agenda which included an interesting presentation on rural schools in Rio Blanco County by Margie Rogers and Janice Clark, the group elected new officers for 2011.
Steve Wix was re-elected president until the group can find a willing replacement. Steve explained to the group about his time commitment with his new business, White River Convenience Store, but promised the members he would serve until another person was found. Gayle Rogers was elected vice president, Sue Hicken secretary and Ellen Reichert treasurer. Sparky Pappas and Ellene Meece were elected as additional members to the board. The standing officers are Tom Allen, Chris Uphoff, Joe Sullivan and Dave Steinman.
The Historical Society is currently promoting history through the Smithsonian Exhibit “Between Fences” at the White River Museum and energetically sponsoring several additional activities related to this informative display that will continue at the museum through Feb. 26. The bonus activities include the Paint-a-Picket Project, where local students executed interpretive painting on literal wooden fence pickets which are on display around town, and a photography contest (ended Dec. 20) where contestants submitted photographs depicting unusual fence content. Winners will be announced Jan. 18 and photos will be on display at Fawn Creek Gallery at Sixth and Main in Meeker. Finally, the silent auction for the quilt product exhibit at the Meeker Hotel lobby will announce their winners at the hotel’s Teddy Roosevelt Social Hour on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the hotel for that event.
This year, the organization will again significantly contribute to the Fourth of July Range Call events and are also continuously raising funds to build the historical Milk Creek Memorial Park on Rio Blanco County Road 15 northeast of Meeker.
Rio Blanco Historical Society and White River Museum encourages residents of our county to join their membership to help “preserve the past for our future.”
