RANGELY I It’s volleyball season, so that’s Audrey’s Hogan’s favorite sport.
If it was winter, then basketball would be her favorite sport. Whatever sports season it is at the time, that’s her favorite.
“I like ‘em all,” said Hogan, who competes in volleyball, basketball and track at Rangely High School. “Whichever one I’m playing at the time is my favorite.”
Hogan is the lone senior returning starter for the Lady Panthers’ volleyball team.
“Audrey is a great team leader on and off the court,” said Jimmie Mergleman, who coaches Hogan in both volleyball and basketball. “She is very determined and knows what it takes for us to get to the next level. She is not satisfied with just attending the state tournament, we go there to win.”
Besides being a starter in volleyball, Hogan is the starting point guard for Rangely’s girls’ basketball team and runs the 800 and 1,600 in track. She’s qualified for the state track meet all three years.
Hogan is interested in running track in college.
“I would really like to,” she said. “I’ve got some letters about running.”
Hogan hasn’t made up her mind yet where to attend college.
“I’m not sure what I want to do, or where I want to go,” she said. “I want to stay in state. Maybe Mesa (State College in Grand Junction), or Adams (State College in Alamosa), or even CSU (Colorado State University in Fort Collins), not to run, but for school. I don’t know how my times match up in Div. I.”
Scholastically, Hogan is also at the top of her game. She’s ranked second in her class, behind Eric Sisneros.
“We’re like point something from each other on the scale,” she said of the friendly rivalry.
As far as her favorite class, Hogan said, “I like English the best.”
Being a senior, Hogan knows this is her last go-round as a high school athlete. And she’s hoping to make the most of it.
“It’s not more pressure, but it makes it more important,” she said. “I know we have a lot of potential.”
Hogan is hoping the Lady Panthers will make it to the state tournament in both volleyball and basketball, and she hopes to qualify again in track.
“I’m really excited,” she said. “I think it will be a really good year.”
