Homecoming activities in Meeker next week

MEEKER I “Cowboys Got Game!” is the theme for next week’s Meeker Homecoming week. Meeker High School student body president, Madeline Amack, told the Herald Times, “Homecoming is the most memorable time of high-school. Our school unites us all together to support each other in black and gold. On behalf of our student government, I appreciate all the effort and organization everyone puts into our events.”

In addition to traditional activities, this year’s Homecoming week events include parent-teacher conferences from 4-8 p.m., on Wednesday and Thursday.
Monday, Oct. 17, will be Pajama Day. Students are allowed to wear pajamas to school. Junior varsity football will play Rangely in Rangely at 5 p.m.
For “Twister Tuesday,” Oct. 18, participants are expected to wear their assigned colors: yellow for freshmen, red for sophomores, green for juniors, blue for seniors and white for staff members. Some school officials indicated that they were hoping any actual games of Twister would not break out. The annual Powder Puff football game will be held on the refurbished Starbuck Stadium field at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 19 students will be allowed to dress as their opposite gender. Parent-teacher conferences will be held in the cafeteria, 4-8 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 20 is school spirit day with everyone expected to show their loyalty by wearing all their Cowboy black and gold gear. Parent-teacher conferences again will be in the cafeteria, 4-8 p.m. The Peach Fuzz volleyball game will be at 4:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
Friday, Oct. 21 festivities will start at 11 a.m. with music and a barbecue on the courthouse lawn. The Homecoming parade will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the pep rally at the courthouse. Unfortunately, the MHS cross-country team will be away, running at regionals in Delta. The girls’ volleyball games against Paonia are in the gymnasium at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. The football team will play Paonia at 7 p.m. in Starbuck Stadium.
The girls’ softball team is hoping to make it into the state playoffs Homecoming weekend by winning in the regional tournament to be held this weekend in Denver.
Saturday, Oct. 22 the girls’ volleyball teams will play away, in Rangely, at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. The Homecoming dance will be held 9 p.m. to midnight at the Administration Building, followed by Meeker’s first annual Homecoming Shenanigans event at the auxiliary gymnasium. According to Principal Amy Chinn, the Shenanigans are sponsored by a Meeker parent group, Parents Providing Alternative Activities, specifically formed to offer drug- and alcohol-free fun activities for students.
The Shenanigans will run from midnight to 4 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Planned activities include an inflatable bungee run, a mini-Cowboy Shootout, karaoke, board games, food and door prizes. There will be a $5 cover charge for all the excitement. The parent group could use some additional help during the event as well as donations for door prizes and refreshments.
