RBC I Meeker and Rangely high school Homecoming Week activities are well underway with the respective Homecoming dances on Saturday night culminating the week’s events.
The Meeker Senior Class team beat the Junior Class in the boys’ Peach Fuzz Volleyball games Monday night.
Today is Cowboy Pride Day, concluding tonight with a community spirit-raising bonfire at the county fairgrounds at 8:30 p.m. Meeker fans and parents are urged to come join students, the band, cheerleaders and athletes for the celebration. Students are urging folks to bring their own chairs.
The JV and varsity softball teams have games against Basalt this afternoon at 4 and 6 p.m.
Friday is Homecoming Day with the fundraising barbecue on the courthouse lawn beginning at 11 a.m., going until 1 p.m. Shana and Matt Holliday will perform.
The Homecoming Parade will begin on Main Street at 1 p.m. followed by a pep assembly at the courthouse.
Mary and Mike Washburn have been named Parade Marshals by the high school students. Both Mary and Mike have long, positive relationships with the students through Mary’s previous work as a teacher and librarian, and now as a substitute. Mike has provided positive oversight of the kids through the years as a town policeman.
The cross-country team will be running at Sweitzer State Park against Delta at 10 a.m. The JV and varsity volleyball teams will play against Grand Junction’s Caprock Academy at 5 and 6 p.m. here in the main gym.
Friday night’s 7 p.m. football Homecoming game is against Lake County High School. The halftime show will include crowning of royalty, the cheer team and the high school marching band.
On Saturday, home volleyball games against Plateau Valley High School are at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
The Homecoming Dance will be in the gym at the Administration Building, from 8 until 11 p.m.
Meeker High School Principal Amy Chinn said, “The student council has been working hard to plan fun events for the students and the community. Homecoming is an exciting time of the school year to celebrate our school pride and involve our community in some of the great things that are happening at MHS.”
At Rangely High School, Friday’s theme is Circus Day, with freshmen dressing up as clowns, sophomores as scary circus twins, juniors as circus performers and seniors as, of course, the ring masters.
Throughout the week, each grade will receive points based on participation in the various activities, including spirit days with the winning grade receiving a pizza party.
Today, the Western Rio Blanco Metropolitan Rec Center will host its traditional chili dinner at 5:30 p.m. After filling up on a hot bowl of chili, fans and students will head across the street, where the bonfire will begin at dusk.
Game day, Friday, will be packed full of events. The school parade along Main Street starts at 1:30 p.m.
For the first time this year, the students reached out to the local business community to help sponsor floats with physical assistance as well as donations of supplies and money. RJSHS librarian Diane Sizemore said the response from the community has been great.
Game times will follow the parade with the volleyball game starting at 4 p.m.. The RHS volleyball team will play the Plateau Valley Cowboys.
After the girls are done on the court, the boys will take to the football field with the Panthers’ game beginning at 7 p.m. Both teams are taking on the Hayden Tigers.
The Homecoming dance on Saturday night will be held at the Early Education Center, beginning at 9 p.m. with the start of photo taking at 8:30 p.m.
