J.C. Watt wins Meeker Men’s Club golf title for third straight year

Irv Griffin, left, had a good weekend of golf at the Meeker Men’s Club Championship as he captured first place in the second flight, but he also turned in the first sub-par score of his life. J.C. Watt, right, also had another good performance over the two days of the tournament, having won the championship flight for the third straight year.

Watt, right, also had another good performance over the two days of the tournament, having won the championship flight for the third straight year.
MEEKER I “The camaraderie is what made it,” Meeker Men’s Club President Larin Crase said about the reason so many enjoyed men’s club in Meeker this summer.
“Everyone showed up and we had a shotgun start each Wednesday, instead of everyone playing at different times during the day,” he said.

The verbal jabs were flying around after the annual Meeker Men’s Club Championship over the weekend, and that added to the fun of the tournament.
“One more than last year,” defending champion J.C. Watt said after winning the championship flight for a third year in a row, but not knowing how many times he has won the championship overall.
Pat Walsh wished the tournament was only one day because he was ahead of Watt by two shots after Saturday’s 18 holes. However, he couldn’t hold on and finished with the second-best net score (132) in the championship flight.
Watt shot a 72 on the first 18 and came back to shoot an even par 68 on Sunday to win the championship flight.
Meeker Golf Course manager Scott Bowman shot 74 both days and he finished with the second best gross score. Crase finished with the best net score (127) in the championship flight.
“It’s a great honor for me to have the best net score, and I would like to thank Bryce Ducey for his support,” Crase said.
Twenty golfers were split into three different flights, and Irv Griffin dominated the second flight, shooting a 76 the first day and a one under par on Sunday.
“I’ve never been under par,” Griffin said. “Last year I was one shot over my age and this year I shot eight under my age.”
“I hope I can shoot under par when I’m 75,” Watt said.
Griffin’s long-time partner Donnie McPherson had the second-best gross score in the second flight and George Back had the best-net score (121), 15 shots better than Harry Watt.
Clint Chappell had the best gross score (163) in the third flight, and Mark Citzelman was second, 10 shots back. Jason Mack had the best net score (125) in the third flight and Ted Stewart was second, 11 shots behind Mack.
Several Meeker golfers commented on the participation at men’s club this year, which featured two-man match play.
“The best and worst thing about our men’s club this year is that we copied Rangely’s idea,” Meeker champion J.C. Watt said with a final verbal jab at the town that currently hosts the Rio Blanco County Cup.
