RBC I The Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach Program, in partnership with Silver Spur Ranch and Spur Outfitters, hosts one youth hunter to participate in a cow moose hunt each year. The hunter is selected from an essay competition with applicants writing a 1,000-word essay on a designated topic. The 2009 topic was “How is hunting an important Wildlife Management tool?”
Colin Keeler of Meeker received the highest score among 25 applicants ranging from 12 to 17 years of age. Colin was notified of his selection several weeks before the hunt and worked hard on his shooting skills and hunting techniques for moose.
Colin and his father stayed at the Dickens Lodge on the Canadian River Ranch property as guests of the ranch and Spur Outfitters. Silver Spur Ranch donated the cow moose license and Spur Outfitters provided a guide for the hunt. After two days of hard hunting, Colin was able to harvest a mature cow moose.
Silver Spur Ranch is a participant in the Colorado Division of Wildlife Ranching For Wildlife Program. They provide this unique youth hunting opportunity each year as well as a youth only cow elk hunt hosted on the property in support of the Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach Program.
Outreach efforts are greatly enhanced by the support and participation of private landowners and ranches who provide access to their lands and facilities.
