MEEKER | “It was a good season,” Meeker High School volleyball coach Janae Stanworth said after her team was eliminated from post-season play after losing in the state-qualifying regional tournament last Saturday in Paonia. “We played Paonia and Ridgeway back-to-back,” coach Stanworth said of the regional competition. Meeker lost to Paonia in three games (25-23, 25-15 and 25-12), then played four before losing to Ridgeway. “We really battled well in the first game against Paonia, we just couldn’t pull it out,” coach Stanworth said. “We had a let down after that and made too many errors.” Meeker lost the first game 25-21 but came back to win the second one 25-23, before losing the third and fourth sets by the same score (25-23). “All the games against Ridgeway were close. We just couldn’t close them out,” coach Stanworth said. “We made mistakes at the wrong time.” Meeker seniors Kinzy Burke, Halle Ahrens, Peyton Burke, Loran Casias, Reese Pertile and Maggie Phelan played their final varsity volleyball games but the varsity roster also contained one junior, five sophomores and a freshman. “We will miss the seniors and their experience but it will be nice to carry forward some young players to next year,” coach Stanworth said.
