MEEKER I The Meeker High School volleyball team both lost and won a league match last weekend and will end the regular season with a homecoming match against Hayden Friday, before traveling to Collbran on Saturday.
The Lady Cowboys lost to county rival Rangely last Friday, as the Lady Panthers won their homecoming match in three straight games.
“We definitely didn’t play our best match against them,” Meeker coach Christy Atwood said. “I want to give credit where credit is due, and Jimmie (Mergelman, Rangely coach) has her team playing well. There are just a few teams with more than one gun and we couldn’t shut down any of them.”
Atwood said her team regrouped the following day, where the volleyball program honored parents and drew attention to breast cancer awareness by all wearing pink socks.
“We played much better against Vail Mountain,” Atwood said of last Saturday’s match. “All the seniors started and they all played well in their assigned positions.”
The Lady Cowboys won the first game 27-25, the second game was just as close, with Meeker winning 25-23, before taking complete control to win the final game and Western Slope League match 25-18.
“It was a great team effort and we have been working on that, coming together,” Atwood said. “We started doing things as a team and it showed.”
Meeker is currently 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the league standings, where this weekend’s matches will be needed to determine the final league standings. The Lady Cowboys will play Tuesday in the first round of the district tournament — this weekend’s matches will determine if Meeker will host a match or travel.
“A lot of things could happen,” Atwood said of the final standings.
Meeker will celebrate homecoming this week, hosting the Hayden Tigers Friday, then play their final regular season match Saturday against Plateau Valley.
