Lady Cowboys pin 52-36 loss on Olathe Pirates

MEEKER — Coming back from a disappointing performance in the WREA Cowboy Shootout from the week before, the Meeker High School girls’ basketball team traveled to Olathe last Saturday and defeated the Pirates 52-36.
“We had a lot better shooting percentage, than the last game we played,” Coach Hallie Blunt said. Meeker finished fourth the previous week, losing to Rangely in the consolation championship of the Cowboy Shootout.
The Lady Cowboys jumped ahead of the Pirates 16-4 after the first quarter. Senior Marki Cook scored eight points, including a 3-pointer in the first eight minutes, while classmates Janae Kindall, Sydney Cook and Meg Nieslanik also added to the lead. Meeker scored 11 points in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead after the first half of the non-league contest against the 3A school.
“The girls really set a good pace in the first two quarters,” Blunt said. “All 10 girls played and they just ran up and down the court.”
Blunt said the Pirates came within 10 points in the third quarter, but Meeker took a 15-point lead into the final period.
“They maintained their composure and just waited for better shots,” Blunt said.
Kindall scored six in the third quarter and classmate Kelsey Kendall hit a 3-point shot. Seniors Megan Ridings and Marki Cook each hit 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
“Our defense was great,” Blunt said. “They all did a good job of doing their job and not over-playing.”
Marki Cook led all scores with 19, Kindall finished with 15 and junior Stacy Fitzgibbons added six. Sydney Cook finished with four, Kendall and Ridings each finished with three and Nieslanik two. Meeker’s JV team needed a four-minute overtime period to win 51-47.
“It was an exciting game,” Blunt said. Rebecca de Vergie led all scorers with 20 points.
Meeker will play three games in Middle Park, starting today against the host school in Granby, then West Grand Friday and Love Christian Saturday.
