Lady Cowboys take Tigers 56-30

MEEKER | The lady Cowboys opened 2017 on the road, losing to the West Grand Mustangs in Kremmling last Friday before beating Hayden at home Saturday last. Meeker will host county rival Rangely tonight then play in Walden on Friday and Baggs, Wyo., Saturday.
Meeker lost 43-49 to the Mustangs then beat Hayden 56-30, starting league play with a 1-1 record and currently 3-4 overall.
“The girls played really well against West Grand,” Meeker head coach Jamie Rogers said. “West Grand was hitting a lot of shots. We continued to show resolve, playing tough defense and keeping ourselves in the game when we couldn’t make a basket.”
Meeker trailed 6-10 after the first quarter, then scored 14 and took a 20-17 lead at halftime, only to be outscored in the third quarter by 10 points. The lady Cowboys scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, one more than the Mustangs, but it was not enough.
Megan Shelton led the team with a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Senior Reese Pertile scored nine, classmate Halle Ahrens and Gracie Bradfield each added eight points, while Maggie Phelan scored five and Sierra Williams added two.
Some of Meeker’s starters got into foul trouble against Hayden but the Cowboys’ bench did not let up the defensive pressure.
“We had some foul trouble early but the subs came in and did an excellent job, keeping the momentum going,” coach Rogers said. “It was one of those games where everybody was needed and everyone stepped up.”
Shelton and Ahrens both scored 13 points against the Tigers and pulled down six and two rebounds, respectively. Pertile finished with eight points and led the team with eight rebounds, while Phelan scored six points and brought down seven rebounds. Kenzie Turner, Julia Dinwiddie and Bradfield all scored four points and Anna Walsh added a basket.
Meeker’s varsity will tip-off today against the lady Panthers at 6 p.m.
