Lady Cowboys volleyball team drops pair of league matches

MEEKER I The Lady Cowboy volleyball team lost two Western Slope League matches last week and will play two more this weekend, including a home match, honoring parents and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Saturday afternoon.
Meeker lost to the Paonia Eagles at home last Friday and then to the North Park Lady Wildcats Saturday.
“You can take the losses and do two things,” head coach Christy Atwood said she told her team. “You can get angry or you can learn from them and do better the next weekend.
“I give credit to them (Paonia), it’s hard to beat a good team twice in a row,” Atwood said. Meeker had defeated the Eagles in their most recent match. “We couldn’t get a rhythm or into the flow of the game and we had a ton of unforced errors.”
Meeker lost in three games; 16-25, 19-25 and 21-25.
The Lady Cowboys pushed the Lady Wildcats to five games but lost the match in Walden.
“We played a pretty good match but when we needed to take control of the match, we didn’t capitalize,” Atwood said. “In the fifth game, we spotted them eight points before we started to play.”
Meeker will travel to the west end of the county to play the Rangely Lady Panthers Friday and host Vail Mountain Saturday, starting at 3 p.m., with the varsity scheduled to play at 5 p.m.
“Rangely is always a tough matchup,” Atwood said of the (intra-county) rivalry. “Jimmie (Mergelman) has her girls playing well. We’ll prepare as best we can and do the best we can.”
Atwood encouraged fans to wear pink to Saturday’s match, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
