Lady Cowboys win two

Meeker girls’ basketball coach Greg Chintala in the middle of the team huddle after the lady Cowboys used a smothering defense and good shooting to pound Grand Valley 60-36 Tuesday in front of a hometown crowd.

MEEKER I Meeker took on Steamboat Springs JV in a non-league game last Wednesday, Jan. 25, then headed to Walden on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a conference match against the North Park Wildcats. Both games were easy wins for the lady Cowboys.
In Steamboat, Meeker hit the floor with its defensive game and attacked their opponents with a full court press. The Sailors answered with a short 1-3-1 press of their own, but could not match Meeker’s intensity. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the first quarter, Meeker was leading 18-8.
The pressure on the lady Sailors continued into the second quarter as the lady Cowboys continued their relentless defensive assault. Capitalizing on steals, Meeker once again outscored Steamboat to a 29-13 lead at the half. The game was a runaway as the lady Cowboys ran up 16 points to the Sailor’s six in the third quarter. Coming out in the fourth quarter with a change in the press, Meeker cruised to the finish, 49-21.
Leading the team in scoring were junior Kaysyn Chintala with 15, senior Kathryn Doll with 10, sophomore Taylor Neilson bucketed eight, sophomore Aly Ridings had six, sophomore Piper Haney and freshman Sydney Hughes each scored four and senior Aubrey Walsh cashed in a bucket.
The ladies attacked the Wildcats Saturday with relentless pressure to lead 15-3 in the first three minutes, then hit a lull as they couldn’t seem to make a bucket. Meeker ended the first quarter 18-9. The second quarter picked up a bit as they outscored the Wildcats by double digits but the lady Cowboys still seemed sluggish. They headed for halftime with a 16-point lead, 31-15.
Finally awake, Meeker hit the floor and continued their persistent pressure in the third period. The lady Cowboys racked up some steals and scored 16 points while allowing North Park to only make a bucket. Meeker led 47-17 going into the fourth quarter.
With a comfortable 30-point lead in the fourth quarter all of the lady Cowboys found some floor time as Meeker walked away with a conference-level victory over the Wildcats, 56-32. Walsh led the charge with 14, Ridings had 10, sophomore Katie Dinwiddie cashed in eight, Neilson and Hughes made six each, Doll and Chintala each added four, Haney had three and junior Amanda Kindall added a free throw.
Meeker’s junior varsity also played the Sailors Wednesday. They handled Steamboat’s freshman team with ease as they cruised to a nice 20-point victory. The lady Cowboy freshmen headed to Craig for a freshman tournament where they played three games on Saturday. Meeker ended up with two wins and one loss.
Meeker continues its pursuit into the top 10 rankings for the Colorado Preps Network. The ladies started the week with a non-conference game against 3A Grand Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at home. They will travel to Collbran on Saturday, Feb. 4, to clash with the Plateau Valley Cowboys for a conference game.
