MEEKER | The lady Cowboys used their defense to create their offense and win two more games last week, including a Western Slope League game against the Paonia Eagles. Meeker will host the Soroco Rams, who are currently undefeated in the WSL, in the final game of the regular season this Friday. Meeker lost to Rangely in January and both Rio Blanco County teams have one league loss with the Panthers playing Paonia in their final game of the regular season when the final WSL standings will be determined.
Meeker started fast in both games and kept comfortable leads throughout to beat the Eagles 46-28 in front of hometown fans, then slayed the Dragons 60-37 in DeBeque last Saturday.
“Both nights our defensive pressure created a lot of early turnovers that we were able to score on and jump out to an early lead,” Meeker head coach Jamie Rogers said. “Against Paonia, Tori (Lasker) had a lot of big steals, that led to layups.”
Lasker led the lady Cowboys with 18 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals against the Eagles. Megan Shelton hit two three-pointers and finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Gracie Bradfield scored nine points and had four steals, while Kenzie Turner also had four steals and three rebounds against the Eagles. Julia Dinwiddie pulled down nine rebounds and scored four points, while Sierra Williams added three points and Kirsten Brown scored two.
“Against DeBeque, Megan made four three’s, followed by another three from Gracie, all in the first quarter,” Coach Rogers said of the early lead against the Dragons.
Shelton led all scorers with 16 points, 13 rebounds and four steals, while Bradfield scored 15. Dinwiddie finished with 12 points, Williams scored nine, including three-for-three from the free throw line. Brown finished with four, while Turner and Riley Pertile, each added a basket.
Meeker recorded 19 steals against the Eagles and 18 against the Dragons.
Meeker is 9-1 in the WSL and they will host the undefeated (10-0) Rams Friday.
