Lady Panthers begin league play with 62-36 over Soroco

RANGELY — Although it was their first game back after the holiday break, the RHS Lady Panthers basketball team showed no signs of rust on the road against the Soroco Rams.
The fast start by the Panthers was fueled by a combination aggressive defense in the backcourt and strong post play on the offensive side.
This gave the team a 14-point (20-6) lead at the end of the first quarter, and they never looked back.
The second quarter was more of the same on the defensive side as they extended their lead going into the half by four to result in a 31-13 advantage at the midway point.
Hillary Hayes, Victoria Phelan and Marie Morton continued their domination of the paint in the second half by not only scoring inside but also rebounding the ball on both ends of floor.
The team pulled down a total of 12 offensive rebounds for the game which helped make sure the Rams were never able to make a dent in the Panther lead.
The ladies extended their lead in both the third and fourth quarters and the end result was a comfortable 62-36 victory that will hopefully give them some momentum going into a week where they will play three games in five days; one of which will be their second league contest.
Eight different scorers contributed to the victory, led by Hillary Hayes with 19. Victoria Phelan posted a hard working double-double with 12 boards to go along with her 14 points. Other stats of note include eight points and six assists for Audrey Hogan, and nine points, five rebs and three blocks by Marie Morton.
JV girls pull out victory
Special to the Herald Times

RANGELY — With a long trip and being short-handed the Rangely JV girls basketball team pulled out a 25-24 victory over Soroco High School.
It was not pretty but the girls played hard and left everything on the court. This was supposed to be half a game due to Soroco only having 10 players in the program but ended up playing three two-minute overtime periods before the JV Panthers pulled out the victory.
Leading the JV Panthers in scoring was Roz Thacker with 16 points, doing a great job at point gaurd.
Also scoring was Rosalise Coombs and Hunter Schaeffer with four points. Schaeffer hit two big free throws with .6 seconds on the clock to put us into the third overtime period.
Dakota Kinney scored one point but did a great job on the boards by pulling down 10 rebounds.
Hayley Enterline gave some good minutes on the court and helped out with the victory.
This victory gave the JV Panthers their third win and surpassed their victory total from last year. They’ll go into next week with a 3-3 record.
