RBC I Cedar Ridges Golf Course has been a busy place and will continue to be for the next two weeks as the 27-hole, two-man tournament will be played this weekend, followed by the Couples Classic.
However, on Saturday it was the Rangely Open being played with the largest field in its young history.
“This was the third annual Rangely Open, and we had the biggest field we have had, at 35 players,” course manager Chris Hejl said of the field, which was split into three flights.
Vernal’s Blake Murray was the best golfer on the course, shooting a 68 to win the championship flight, two shots ahead of Cedar Ridges’ defending course champion Clark Edwards. Robby Elam finished third.
Casey Ducey finished with the best net score (68) in the championship flight while Rafe Johnston of Roosevelt, Utah, was second with a 72 and Chris Hejl finished with the third best net score (74).
Rangely’s Julian Mendoza won the first flight with a gross score of 78, six shots ahead of Jeremy Cantrell and nine shots ahead of Mark Neumeier.
Local golfer Caleb Templeton had the best net score (65) in the first flight, seven shots ahead of Bryan Mackay, giving Terry Richardson third.
Twelve teams were in the second flight, which was won by Rangely’s own Jessy Powell, with a gross score of 89, Meeker’s Jason Mack was three shots back and Clint Chappell, also of Meeker, finished with the third best gross score.
Robert Morgan and Adam Johnson tied at 72 for the best handicapped scores in the second flight and Bill Cady placed third with a net score of 75.
