The Meeker Volunteer Fire Department taught fire prevention for preschool through fifth grades this past week. The preschool and kindergarten learned about good and bad fires, not to play with matches and lighters, stop, drop, cover your face and roll if your clothes catch fire, and what to do if a fire happens in your home. Firefighters donned full structure gear and crawled among the kids to encourage them not to be afraid of a fireman if they have to help them get out of a burning structure. The kids also learned the importance of not hiding if there was a fire in their home.
At the elementary school, the kids reviewed home escape plans, practiced calling 911 into dispatch at the Sheriff’s Office, what to do if there is a fire in their home and the importance of staying healthy, and teamwork, both in the fire service and for them. The fifth-graders learned when and how to use a fire extinguisher. They were then able to practice with a fire extinguisher by putting out a fuel fire in a burn pan provided by the Rio Blanco County Fleet Department. Tri-County Fire donated 11 used fire extinguishers for the fifth-graders to use.
The kids received gifts and were given a tour of Meeker’s new Engine One.
The Meeker Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank Rio Blanco County, Tri-County Fire, Wade’s Auto Body, the Meeker Recreation and Park District and the Meeker School District for donating supplies or personnel and making the 2009 Fire Prevention Week successful.
