Letter: Meeker seeks ideas for grade school site

The Meeker Town Board is seeking input on the future of the current elementary site.
With construction of the new Elementary School well under way, the focus is now shifting to “What will happen to the old building and grounds?” As promised, the town of Meeker mayor and Board of Trustees have scheduled a meeting, Oct. 6 for 7 p.m. at the Town Hall, 345 Market St., in the board room downstairs, to hear and discuss proposals for the future use of the current Meeker Elementary School building and land downtown. Once the old school is vacated (fall of 2010), ownership of the facility and land revert back to the town and the town board will decide which direction to take, based heavily upon input from the Meeker-area citizens.
Rio Blanco County will make a presentation concerning constructing a justice center on the property to house the county jail, courtrooms, dispatch center and sheriff’s office at this meeting. Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) has also expressed an interest in the site and will make a presentation this night as well.
Although citizens’ voices are not easily heard at the state and federal level, this is a great opportunity to become educated about the proposed options and have the chance to ask questions or voice opinions where your input still counts. The town of Meeker mayor and Board of Trustees cordially invite you, the citizens, to participate in this meeting, enabling elected officials to make the best decision based on your input.

If you don’t wish to make a formal presentation, please come and listen to the presentations and have the opportunity to speak to the board.
