In response to the letter printed on April 8 regarding the four-day school week, I would remind the readers that it is the job of the schools to educate, not to provide daycare, parenting services and a moral compass. Remember that the family is the backbone of our society, and therefore the greater responsibility of that extra day off lies on the parents, not the public school system. Sometimes there is no way for a parent to stop a kid from going down the wrong path. However, I do not see the correlation between a four-day school week and an increased juvenile crime rate. The kids that cause trouble seem to be able to find plenty of time on a two-day weekend to get into it. Therefore, if our schools can provide the same education or better with fewer of our taxpayer dollars, then they should.
