The Rangely Outdoor Museum’s Ice Cream Social and Homemade Ice Cream Contest, was held Sunday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. at the East End Park during Septemberfest weekend.
We had a great turn-out for this event. The cool wind that morning felt like rain but cleared up just in time. A huge thank you to Fiscus and Gravy for entertaining us again this year. They are the Fiscus family band that played and sang a variety of Celtic music enlisting the help of the Rangely Junior/Senior High School’s music teacher, Christian Saunders. They did a great job.
We had six entries in the homemade ice cream contest. I really feel for the judges; what a hard job. Our contestants were: Nita Henson, Mary Ann Walz, Don Peach, Phalon Osborne and Pauline Miller. Thank you all so much for participating in this year’s event. Our winners were: third place with Addie’s Lemon and Orange was Don Peach, winning a check for $50; second place with Peanut Butter was Mary Ann Walz, winning a check for $75; and our first place winner with Root Beer was Phalon Osborne, winning a check for $125. This young lady has a talent for making ice cream. Thank you again and keep practicing for next year’s event. A special thank you goes out to Bill Willis and Teri Wilczek of W.C. Striegel for their continued support of this event with the donation of the $250 in prize money. We couldn’t do it without you.
Our judge’s panel consists of three randomly selected people from the community. They come in on Saturday, one each hour throughout the afternoon. Each judge not knowing who the other judges are. They fill out a sheet of criteria based on a number system. The ice cream is numbered only. All these numbers are tallied at the end of the day. The last few years has shown us that this is the perfect way to handle this event. Thank you to this year’s judges. You know who you are.
An event like this couldn’t happen with out donations and the help of volunteers, staff, and board members. Thank yous go out to all of the following: Bill Hume for donating the ice cream and ice. Cheryl Robertson for donating the money to buy the supplies needed. Loyann Hayes for picking up the supplies and always being here to handle the gift shop, visitors and buildings during the social. This is a great help. Julia Davis for all the hard work she put in on the 1913 school house display. Loni Noker for her help with the set up, serving and tear down. Also, our board members and Staff for their hard work.
We also want to extend a big thank you to Bud Striegel for donating the new logs around the bottom of the Wolf Canyon School. A huge step towards the renovation of this building.
