I read in a May 2009 issue of the Herald about the death of Warren “Bud” Ely.
Bud and I served in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II, but in different units.
After the war, Bud and I met in northern Italy. We had a nice visit, sprawled on a grassy slope. I had just received my beer and cigarette ration. Since I used neither I gave them to Bud.
Bud said he had a buddy in the Grave Registration Unit (they picked up the bodies after the battle). He always asked if they had picked up anyone named Herring. He said he was relieved when the answer came back “no.” So was I.
I will never forget Bud.
