Letters to the Editor: April 19, 2012

Thank you
Dear Editor:
When you read the “thank yous” in the paper you really can’t understand the true depth of it until it happens to you. We can’t begin to thank the Meeker Volunteer Fire Department, Darrold Nay, Shawn Bolton, Rio Blanco County, BLM, White River Electric, the Sheriff’s Department and the Juniper Valley Fire Fighters for all their hard work putting out the fire at the ranch which could have spread rapidly without their quick response. They all took time away from their families to help us on the afternoon of Easter Sunday and were there early Monday morning and we are sure they will be checking for hot spots in the days ahead. These people are amazing, compassionate and true professionals and we are so very thankful for their fast response. Also all the kindness of family, friends and neighbors that have helped and offered to do whatever we need done, is so appreciated beyond words. How fortunate we are to live in this community. Thank you!
The Parr family

Valuation year
Dear Editor:
As directed by state law, the County Assessor is responsible for valuing all property in the county. During intervening years, only property owners who have a valuation change will receive a notice of valuation from the Rio Blanco County Assessor’s office. Property owners who receive a notice of valuation around May 1 of this year had new construction, demolished property, a change in the use of their property, or a correction/adjustment was made to their records since last year. If you did not keep your 2011 notice of valuation, please refer to the tax notice you received from the Rio Blanco County Treasurer in January 2012 or call the assessor’s office at 970-878-9410.
The value on your notice of valuation will be used in the calculation of your property taxes for the 2013 tax bill you receive from the county treasurer in January 2013. The actual value of your property is multiplied by an assessment rate before taxes are computed. Residential property has been assessed at 7.96 percent since 2003. Vacant land and commercial property are assessed at 29 percent. The different rates are required by the Constitution; and, they stabilize the proportion of the tax burden paid by residential property owners. Colorado procedural and statistical standards for mass appraisal, and equity of assessment for real property, are some of the most stringent in the United States. Colorado assessor offices are audited yearly by the State of Colorado.
Your property taxes support many of the entities (schools, municipalities, fire districts, cemetery districts, etc.) governed by local citizen-elected boards. These entities provide services to Rio Blanco County citizens.
If you wish to appeal your classification or value, Colorado law requires the county assessor to hear objections to real property valuations beginning no later than May 2, 2012. Appeals must be postmarked or submitted in person to the Assessor no later than June 1, 2012.
If you have any questions, please call 970-878-9410.
Renae T. Neilson
Rio Blanco County Assessor

Holocaust awareness week
Dear Editor:
On behalf of Jessica Kruger and myself, we eagerly invite all CNCC faculty, staff, and students to Colorado Northwestern Community College’s inaugural 2012 Holocaust Awareness Week, which will be held April 16-20. These dates correspond with the nationally recognized Days of Remembrance, April 15-22, as declared by Congress and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In addition to the Holocaust, other genocides in Armenia, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur have anniversaries in April as well; which is why April has been designated as Genocide Prevention Month.  This year’s “2012 Holocaust Awareness Week: The Movie Series” is a week-long event that includes the screening of documentaries and film that pertain to the Holocaust and other modern genocides and ethnic cleansings, followed by a short discussion.  The goal of Holocaust Awareness Week is to honor the past, provide an educational venue that teaches respect and diversity, and to bring awareness to past and current genocidal and ethnic cleansing atrocities.
All of the events are free and are open to CNCC students, faculty and staff.
Thank you for your
time and attention,
April Sanchez
CNCC history instructor/
assistant volleyball coach

Rangely tradition

Dear Editor:
The character of a community is revealed in times of crisis. The Rangely community suffered heartache when Roebi Hodges was in an accident that sent him to Denver via flight for life. He is recovering like a champion; however the emotional and financial impact of the accident will affect the Hodges family for a long time. A group of educators has banned together to assemble a series of fundraisers to support Roebi and his family in their time of great need.
Golf Benefit for the Hodges Family, Cedar Ridges Golf Club, Rangely, Colo., Friday, April 20, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The nine-hole round is free of charge. Donations will be accepted. Hamburger Combo Meals $6 (all proceeds will be donated to the Hodges’ family). Prizes, putting challenge, longest drive, closest to hole competitions and hole-in-one shootout will all be a part of the fundraiser.
Roebi Hodges is a 3rd grader at Parkview Elementary School. He is recovering at Children’s Hospital in Denver from an accident in which he sustained a severe head injury. Parkview Elementary staff is hosting this dinner at school to help the family financially. The spaghetti dinner is on 4-23-12 from 5:30-7p.m.
The support of the community has been aided by Mr. Huitt and Mr. Streigel with financial contributions to the fundraising effort. Rangely is a caring community filled with wonderful people with exceptional character.
Rangely is truly is great place to live.
Todd Cordrey
Superintendent
