As spring and summer approach, we are seeing more and more activity on the Meeker Elementary School playground outside of school hours. Our playground is a great location for people to meet and enjoy each others’ company and the outdoor activities that we love so much. We want to enlist your support with keeping this playground a safe and functional place for our community to gather. The basketball goals on the playground are frequently used by children, adolescents and adults, but at times are abused. When people hang on the rims, it puts a lot of stress on the joint and they invariably end up broken. The elementary school is happy to have the community use the playground but if the rims continue to be broken we will have to remove them when school is not in session. Please help us by encouraging the users of the basketball courts to play in a manner that is safe and will allow the courts to be used by everyone.

May 3-4, the Rangely Animal Shelter joined with numerous animal shelters and humane societies all around Colorado in participating in the 2008 May Animal Adopt-a-thon.
The shelter staff set up at White River Market, bringing their adoptive animals to be viewed for prospective adoption. The event was successful with several of our animals being adopted. This also gave our staff the opportunity to visit with many pet owners, exchanging animal behavior, their needs and even some funny antics.
The Rangely shelter staff thanks the White River Market for giving us the use of their location during our Adopt-a-thon. It was greatly appreciated. We invite everyone to visit us at the shelter; we always have animals waiting, and we’ll try to accommodate your hours to show the animals. Call 675-8320 or 629-1314.
A special thank you to all who donated their time to make our Adopt-a-thon successful. You helped give these animals a new start in life!

I would like to thank the community of Meeker for the calls, flowers and gifts after the passing of my dad April 16.
The outpouring of compassion displayed by this community made my family and me realize what truly special people abide in the place we call home.

Many thank you’s to Irven Griffin, the Meeker Golf Association and all of the sponsors and participants in the first annual Coach Bob Tucker Memorial golf tournament.
Money raised benefits the Coach Bob Tucker Scholarship. This annual scholarship is awarded to a graduating student athlete of Meeker High School who has demonstrated sportsmanship and upstanding character.

The Makin’ Bacon Swine Club would like to thank the Rangely Elks for its donation of six aspen trees that we planted at the Rangely community livestock pens on May 8. We had many members of assorted clubs on hand to plant the trees Thursday evening including the FFA and members of the Elks Club. We would also like to thank Alan Ducey for bringing his bobcat and auger to dig the holes for us. The Elks has pledged its support to help with several projects that are in the works at the community pens including a feed storage shed, and the possibility of building more pens so more youth will be able to participate with livestock projects. Thanks goes out to Karen Wakefield, Ross Alire and Larry Petty of the Elks Club as well as all the kids who helped plant the trees. And as always, a huge thank you to the parents who are always there to support our 4-H kids. We couldn’t do it without you.
