Library fun at elementary school

MEEKER I January was library month at Meeker Elementary School. We set a goal of reading an accumulated 40,000 minutes. When all was tallied we read 140,973 minutes. Preschool through fifth-grade kept track of their minutes. We were very excited to have 10 adults turn in their time as well.
Mrs. Henderson’s fifth grade class was the winning class with 24,226 minutes. The fifth grade classes were the winners of the popcorn party.
One parent commented that she found her children reading under the covers way after bedtime. They wanted to read more minutes. All they wanted to do was read. They read to their siblings, cat and dog, anything that would listen. That is what it is all about. Everyone is a winner.
Our events for the month included Spirit week, . Dessa Watson gave an introduction to 4-H. We enjoyed an evening of bingo and fun prizes Jan. 17. BLM archaeologist Kristin Bowen presented a program on Native American rock art in our county Jan. 30 and volunteer Joseph Ramirez gave a presentation about rocks and fossils found in our county. This program was enjoyed by the second through fifth grades. On Jan. 31 Tom Knowles from the DOW gave an informative presentation about area wildlife preschoolers, kindergarteners and first-graders.
Perhaps the best event of all was the Minute to Win It reading contest with principal Jason Hightower on Feb. 1. The name of the students who had read the most minutes was put in the hat and then the names were drawn out. They challenged Mr. Hightower in a Minute to Win It event.
